The annual kickoff for the Masters season here on the lower mainland always starts with the Ice Breaker up in North Vancouver. For most players this first weekend in April is their first run of the new season and for many it showed in the later games.
The South Fraser Stickmen hope to return to defend their Division Two championship. In Division One it marked a repeat of last years final as the Cowboys hosted the Coasters in the Gold medal game with the Coasters once again walking away with the trophy, title and cooler of refreshments.

Lower Mainland Masters Box League
The Lower Mainland Masters Lacrosse League (LMML) had their inaugural season in 2011 and completed with great success. Kelly Scott scored the first ever goal to kick the
year off as most of the games featured the four teams in a very
competitive atmosphere.
As the rust got knocked off the pace really began to pick up as
weeks went by. The playoffs in August produced some great games and results with Team Blue capturing the Championship trophy.
All the game recaps and results
are posted on the LMML web site listed below.
Going forward in 2012 the League hopes to expand to six teams if player registration leads to quantities required. As well some of the rules and components have been tweaked so for more news go to the LMML web site.

2011 BC Masters Year End Tourney

Seventeen teams competed in this year's BC Masters Invitational box lacrosse tournament hosted in the City of Burnaby. The Grand Masters division exploded to eight teams including Prince George, North Shore Indians, Poco, Surrey, Burnaby, Ladner, Okanagan and Nanaimo.
For Grand Masters the Gold and Bronze lineups were based on a three game round robin that featured the Bronze medal game of the 2-1 Okanagan Grand Masters defeating the 2-1 Poco Saints by a score of 6-3. Pat Nelson sniped four of the goals for the Okanagan team on a six point night. In the Gold game it was the Burnaby Coasters defeating the new Grand Masters team of the Ladner Pioneers in a shoot out after the game ended in a 6-6 tie. Wayne Baker and Russ Heard scored on two of three shots against Pioneer tender Paul Sparrow while Ladner couldn't put one past Rick Mang, tender for the Coasters.
The 'C' division also played a three game round robin featuring the North Shore Cowboys, Surrey Firefighters, Calgary Big Rock and the South Fraser Stickmen. The Bronze game had the Stickmen looking for revenge for an earlier loss against the Big Rock team however with the game sitting at 4-3 for Calgary, South Fraser couldn't put one past the Calgary tender even with the extra man giving the Big Rock the bronze medal.
The Gold 'C' division game featured the undefeated North Shore Cowboys playing the Surrey Firefighters who's only loss in the round robin came at the hands of the Cowboys. North Shore jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they won 15-5 with Ian Peterson having and eight point day including four goals.
This year the 'A' and 'B' division of the Masters category was combined for a four game round robin with the top two playing for Gold in the 'A' title and the winner of 4th and 5th place playing 3rd for the 'B' title.
The 'B' Gold medal game ended up featuring the 2-2 Nanaimo Timbermen going against the 1-3 Poco Saints #1 team. The Timbermen started strong with a 2-0 lead at the end of the first frame but Poco rolled back to tie the game 5-5 at the end of regulation. In the shoot out Poco struck first but after three each it remained tied. In the final shoot out it was Brian Schmidt who popped one in to give the Timbermen the 'B' division Gold medal.
In the 'A' it was a classic gold medal match up as the Burnaby Coasters took on the Ladner Pioneers. The Pioneers entered with a perfect 4-0 record including a first day defeat of the Coasters however Burnaby got the edge in the playoff game as they outscored Ladner 4-2, 4-3, and 4-2 in each of the frames to win 12-7 in a very fast paced and exciting game. Ladner's Bill Mischke scored six of the Pioneer goals while Rick Rawson scored four of the Coasters goals with Russ Heard giving a six point game as well.
Many thanks goes out to the Stickmen, Cowboys and Coasters for hosting the event as well as the City of Burnaby and their staff, the Burnaby Rugby Club, Over the Top Catering for their support and to Jody Weatherby for organizing and running the referees. As well a big thanks to Sharon Sparrow, Sue Chow and Betty Selezinka for their volunteer hours along with Trailside Physio for all their healing that they did.
Congratulations all tournament winners and participants. 2012 is in Poco followed by Nanaimo for 2013.
